For 2017, we have a major focus on sailing education. We have developed three education tracks so that there is something for all members. Each Track will have several events and classes to help you sail faster, safer and in more places around the world.
Track 1: Race Committee and Safety Courses:
Whether you are helping with Race Committee, running Calypso or just want to make sure you, your crew and your fellow sailors are safe on the water we have something for you:
Race Committee Class: We have updated our RC class with some of the newest information from USSailing to ensure that we are running safe, fair and fun races. Come out to ensure that you get your 1st place for volunteering for RC duty.
Calypso Check Out and Safety Class: We have a new check out procedure and safety class to ensure that our mark set boat is there to not only set a fun, fair course, but also make sure they can support the sailors on the water.
CPR Course: One of our members is an American Heart Association, CPR instructor and he is putting on a couple of classes for any member that wants to learn CPR and safety on the water.
Safe Towing Course: When things do not work and you need help getting in, you want to make sure those towing you are a help and do not cause harm. Tow U.S., the top boat towing services is developing a combined classroom and on water session to make us all an expert at towing.
Track 2: Cruising/Boat Ownership
Whether you want to cruise to far off locals, or do more overnights on Lake Grapevine, we have courses for you to make the most of your sailing time.
Chartering from the Caribbean, to Europe to Tahiti: Whether you are new to chartering or have chartered in the Caribbean, this course will over more opportunities to explore the world. We have a great panel of people that have chartered throughout the world and used sailing as a great way to see new sights, meet new people and most important try new foods and drinks.
Buying a boat: For many people their sailboat is the second largest investment after their home. How do you know what boat you should buy, how to evaluate boats and how to make sure you got something right for you. This course will help you match your sailing goals and styles to the right boat type and then help make sure you are getting a great boat for years of fun on the water.
Anchoring and Raft Up: For cruisers, anchoring can be intimidating, especially if you plan on sleeping on the hook. This class will teach you how to anchor in any condition so you do not need to worry when that Squall comes through in the middle of the night. After the class, we can all get some practice with a club raftup and party on the boat.
Track 3: Sailing Fast/Racing
Whether you are new to racing or just trying to move up to the front of the fleet we have something for you. With a combination of on water practice, to class room sessions taught by our best sailors, come out and join us and see what difference it makes.
Advanced Racing Class Room Sessions: We have four sessions planned that will get even the front of the fleet thinking about new ways to win. Sessions will include a Rules Seminar with the latest 2017 rules changes, A sailing strategy session taught by Rod Favela, one of the best sailing professionals in the Metroplex, a mock protest sessions to help you understand the dues and don’ts in the protest room taught by a USSailng Judge, and a team building session that will help new sailors and old with a focus on building a winning team. These four class room sessions will be combined with on the water sessions that will make any sailing team work better.
On Water Training: Whether you are new to sailing or have been sailing with your crew and just want to improve your on water performance, we have a series of sessions from Tacking better, improving your starts, making better mark roundings, and getting more proficient with you downwind sailing. These sessions will include a coach (those at the top of the fleet) that will work with each boat and tailor the session just for you and your boat.
We look forward to seeing everyone in the classroom and on the water – look for upcoming events and join us in making all of us better sailors.
